SAUGUS — Town Meeting members convened for a second time Monday night, where they gave the town approval to borrow $2.9 million for the design and construction of improvements to water pipelines.
The money will come from the Massachusetts Water Resources Authority’s (MWRA) Local Pipeline Assistance Program with 0 percent interest.
Monday’s meeting commenced the first of the town’s financial articles, which were tabled at last week’s meeting session because the Finance Committee had not yet been able to provide recommendations. While the committee has still not finished its recommendations, Town Meeting members were able to discuss eight of the remaining 22 warrant articles.
In addition to the MWRA loan, an article to adopt property tax exemptions for veterans and eligible survivors passed in Monday’s meeting. The new laws make exempt real estate owned by the surviving parents or guardians of U.S. Military and National Guard members killed in service or missing in action.
Town Meeting members also approved an appropriation of $26,700.10 from the Transportation Infrastructure Fund for line painting on the town’s streets and a transfer of $30,000 from free cash to the Compost Facility Revolving Fund.
The Town Meeting will reconvene by Zoom at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 17, provided that the Finance Committee is able to provide recommendations on remaining warrant articles before then. The committee is next scheduled to meet on Wednesday.
