LYNN — The Lynn Classical golf team made a perfect debut in Greater Boston League play on Wednesday afternoon, notching wins over rival Lynn English and new conference foe Everett in a tri-match at Gannon Golf Course. The Rams defeated English 44-28 and then beat Everett 51-21.
“We’ve only had a few practices and it’s been a quick turnaround, but the guys were ready to go (Wednesday),” said Classical coach Jack Morrison. “You could tell they were ready to go. Most of my guys have stayed active in other sports over the past year, but they were definitely excited to get out there and play a real match.”
Brady Warren led the way from the No. 1 spot for Classical, winning both of his matches on the day and shooting a match-low score of 38. TJ Walsh won both of his matches in the No. 2 spot, while first-year player Ryan Dugan won both of his matches in his debut in the No. 5 spot. Steven Downey and Matt Patrie also added wins for the Rams.
“The guys went out there and played well, and you can tell they’ve gotten better,” said Morrison. “Our mantra is ‘get better every day,’ so that’s really all you can ask for this early in the season. We definitely have some things to clean up, but I liked what I saw out there from my guys today.”
English was able to salvage one win on the day, beating Everett 48-24 after falling to Classical 44-28.
“We’ve got a lot of new kids, but they’re excited to be out there and they’re picking the game up quickly,” said English coach Brett Molea, who is in his first season at the helm. “To come out here and get a win in the first match of the season is a huge confidence booster for these kids, and we saw a lot of smiles afterwards.”
Jacob Johansson had a great day in the No. 1 spot despite not earning a win, while Alex McMillian and Justin Barrows impressed in their first matches out on the course.
“I think some of the guys were nervous getting out on the first tee, but they did a great job settling down and stringing shots together,” said Molea. “Golf is a confidence game, and once the guys were able to hit some nice shots they really settled into a groove. There were definitely some surprised faces out there when they saw how well they were playing.”
English (1-1) plays on the road against Winthrop Tuesday morning (10) at Winthrop Golf Club.
“The nice thing about having so many new players is that everyone is coming in with a clean slate and we can teach them everything,” said Molea. “And with that, the biggest thing is that these kids are sponges and they want to learn everything about the game. Right after the match, the guys were already telling me that they can’t wait for the next one.”
Classical (2-0) hosts Medford back at Gannon Monday afternoon (4).
“We have a busy week coming up with matches on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday,” said Morrison. “The season is condensed so we’re doing some back-to-backs, but we’ve got some big matches coming up that we’re going to need to be ready for. I told the guys after (Wednesday’s) match that we’re going to have to get a lot better really quickly if we want to make any noise in the league this year.”
