Saugus native and Northern Essex Community College freshman righthander Todd Tringale has been named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) National Pitcher of the Week for his performance over the weekend. Tringale is the second Knights pitcher to receive the honor this season, as sophomore Levi Burrill (Amesbury) earned the recognition two weeks ago.
This past Saturday, Tringale took the mound for Northern Essex and went seven innings — striking out 13 batters against UConn-Avery Point — while only allowing three hits and issuing one walk in the Knights’ 11-5 win. Of the 100 pitches he threw in the game, 74 of them went for strikes.
Tringale is currently 3-0 in six appearances with a 1.48 ERA and has 14.84 strikeouts per nine innings in 30 1/3 innings worth of work on the season, which currently ranks third nationally for pitchers who have thrown at least 20 innings on the season.
A former standout pitcher at Saugus High, Tringale initially committed to play baseball at UMass Amherst before transferring to Northern Essex. Tringale was a two-time Northeastern Conference All-Star at Saugus, earning NEC MVP honors as a senior in 2019 after going 8-2 with a 0.63 ERA and 119 strikeouts in 70.1 innings.
