To the editor:
My father has been a Lynnfield resident and tax payer for more than 50 years. He is 86 years old and stopped driving three years ago. He is a homeowner, but does not own an automobile. Lynnfield residents have the ability to discard organic material (leaves, sticks, clippings) behind Town Hall … if you are a vehicle owner.
I made multiple telephone calls to Town Hall and sent multiple emails (and “snail mail”) to the office of the Town Clerk.
I was assured that someone would be back in touch with me with a solution as to how my dad could dispose of his organic waste as a non-owner of an automobile. The official with whom I spoke said that they do not “bother” the selectmen with these matters, but that “someone would get back to me.”
There is nothing worse than being ignored and unfortunately, this is what happened with our request for dumping privileges. Perhaps all Lynnfield residents that use the town dump have vehicles registered in their name. As an option, I had suggested that perhaps a placard be created (such as a “handicap” placard) and be made available to the Lynnfield resident during business hours.
It’s hard to believe that a solution could not be created by the town officials of Lynnfield. I am disappointed that my request has fallen on deaf ears.
As the population of Lynnfield ages, I am sure there will be other Lynnfield residents that need this town service that is available to them as a town citizen. If the selectmen of Lynnfield and/or our officials at Town Hall could conceive of a solution for my father’s situation, this will indeed be of value to future generations.
