To the editor:
Regarding the editorial in last Thursday’s (April 1) Item — “It’s time for a clean sweep.”
This should be a wakeup call to all the store and shop owners in the downtown.
What ever happened to the days when shop owners would sweep their storefronts?
I recall each morning they would sweep and pick up any litter, including any in the gutter. Today the attitude is, “it’s not my trash, why clean it?”
The city is going through a building transformation, new high-rise condos downtown and along the waterfront.
Soon buyers will occupy many of these units, along with the disposable income, local businesses surely must be looking forward to new customers, especially after being hit hard due to COVID-19.
If the streets and sidewalks are littered with trash, many customers will most likely not go in because it is not too inviting.
All owners should take pride in their business; it’s their livelihood so pick up a $10 broom.
If at all possible, spruce up your storefront, the facade, add lighting and maybe a unique sign. Make it inviting to come in. If you do, I’m sure you will succeed.
