LYNNFIELD — The Lynnfield volleyball team rebounded nicely from its first loss of the season, riding a big third set to a 3-0 victory over Cape Ann League foe Triton at home Monday evening. The Pioneers won by set scores of 25-19, 25-22, 25-7.
It was a quick start for Lynnfield, who jumped out to a 3-0 lead right away. But the Vikings battled right back to tie the score at 3-3, and the two sides went back and forth over the next several points. After taking an 8-7 lead, the Pioneers caught fire and went on an 11-5 run to force Triton to call a timeout. Triton went on a small run to get back in the set, but Lynnfield closed with four straight points — capped by an ace from Ella Gizmunt — to take the set 25-19.
The second set was much of the same, with the two teams battling through nine ties and 10 lead changes in the frame. Triton gained a foothold at one point and went up 15-11, but Lynnfield stormed right back and took a 22-19 lead to force a Vikings timeout. After a kill by Ava Buonfiglio, the Pioneers took the set 25-22.
That momentum carried right into the third set for Lynnfield. The Pioneers seemingly couldn’t miss in the third set, going ahead 10-1 before Triton called a timeout. Lynnfield extended its lead to 15-1 before the Vikings could even notch another point, and the Pioneers were able to cruise to a 25-7 set victory to take the match.
Lynnfield (8-1) closes out the regular season Wednesday evening (5:30) at home against CAL rival North Reading.
