LYNN — School Committee member Michael Satterwhite announced his intention to run for mayor on Wednesday afternoon.
Satterwhite’s announcement follows those of City Council President Darren Cyr and fellow School Committee member Jared Nicholson, who noted their intentions to run almost immediately after Mayor Thomas M. McGee said he would not be seeking re-election on Monday.
Satterwhite, who has been on the School Committee for the past four years, said that he is running for mayor because he possesses the background, experience and knowledge to strengthen the community.
“As someone who was raised by this city and understands the needs and desires of its citizens, I promise to serve the entire Lynn population and to support all businesses within our 13.5 square miles,” he said.
He announced his plans to improve on affordable housing, public safety and to establish community programs. He also hopes to improve race relation problems through increased diversity and inclusion within city government and school systems.
“Lynn has a diverse population, some of the brightest students and a community that is hungry for growth,” he said.
Satterwhite also said that he will work to incorporate equitable funding to increase youth opportunities and the public education system, strengthen the seniors with access throughout the city and to affordable housing units, and improve the homelessness and food insecurity problems in Lynn.
“I will work for you,” he said. “It sounds simple, but that truly is the first requirement of any elected position.”
Satterwhite believes that Lynn has a solid foundation to grow upward, including in its daycare and afterschool programs, the business community and the arts and cultural communities.
“We must not leave anyone behind,” he said. “And we must listen to the voices in our community.”
In his announcement Monday, McGee thanked his family, friends and the community for their support throughout his term, which he said he is committed to serving out with the same honesty, integrity and respect he has shown throughout his career in public service.
