BOSTON — A former U.S. Postal Service mail carrier has been arrested and charged with stealing mail, the Department of Justice reported.
Brian Thibodeau, 48, was indicted Wednesday on one count of theft of mail by an employee of the U.S. Postal Service. He was released on conditions following an initial appearance before the U.S. Magistrate Judge Marianne B. Bowler.
Thibodeau, who worked as a letter carrier at the Saugus Post Office between 2001 and 2020, is alleged to have stolen customers’ gift cards sent in the mail and spent them for his personal use.
He admitted to stealing approximately $2,000 worth of gift cards from postal customers on his route.
The charging statute provides for a sentence of up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, a fine of $250,000, or twice the gross gain or loss — whichever is greater — and restitution. Sentences are imposed by a federal district court judge based upon the U.S. Sentence Guidelines and other statutory factors.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Eugenia M. Carris, Deputy Chief of Lelling’s Public Corruption and Special Prosecutions Unit is prosecuting the case.
