WINTHROP — Winthrop senior Maura Dorr added another milestone to her incredible career as a Vikings student-athlete on Tuesday night, notching her 1,000th career point as a member of the girls basketball team in a big win over Northeastern Conference foe Gloucester at Chris Tsiotos Court. A team captain, Dorr becomes the 15th basketball player and just the fifth girls player to reach the 1,000-point milestone at Winthrop High. She’s also nearing the 1,000-rebound mark in her career, and she’s led the Vikings in assists during her time there.
“If you look at her, not only does she have the potential to end up as a 1,000-point, 1,000-rebound player, but she’s also an incredible leader and she’s completely bought in during her time here,” said Winthrop coach Joe Lowe. “She’s exactly what you want in a player, and she’s been critical to our success in building this program into what it is.”
And basketball isn’t the only place where Dorr excels for Winthrop, as she is also the leading scorer in the history of the Vikings girls soccer program and the third-leading scorer in the history of the girls lacrosse program — all without playing her junior season in both sports. Add to that her work as the class vice president and all of her AAU athletics outside of school, and Dorr is a model for what a student-athlete can be.
“What people don’t see is that Maura just works constantly to be better,” said Lowe. “She’s the vice president of her class, she does AAU basketball, club soccer and lacrosse camps. And then she’s in the weight room after games trying to keep getting better. Her success is a direct result of her drive and her work, and that can really be a blueprint for a lot of athletes out there.”
As for the game, Winthrop rolled to a 66-21 win on its home court. Maura Dorr led the way with 19 points and seven rebounds, while Maddie Stiglets was right behind with 14 points and three rebounds. Grace Galuris (eight points), Samantha Galuris (seven points), Caroline Earl (six points, six rebounds), Julia Marccocio (four points, seven rebounds) and Jenna Dorr (four points, five rebounds) also played well in the win.
“I think we’re really starting to get into a flow and really get comfortable with how we’re operating this season,” said Lowe. “It’s really started to translate into our play on the court and we’re just looking to keep it going.”
Winthrop came out hot and jumped out to an early lead, taking a 21-5 lead into the second quarter. Maura Dorr hit her milestone about midway through the second, catching a pass from her sister Jenna and finishing at the hoop to notch her 1,000th point.
The Vikings rolled from there, taking a 37-8 lead into halftime. After not allowing a single point in the third quarter, Winthrop coasted to an easy win.
Winthrop now stands at 5-1 on the season, and despite no state tournament in the future the Vikings are aiming to be the class of the Northeastern Conference this season.
“We’re just taking things one day at a time, but our goal is to win out,” said Lowe. “It’s unfortunate that there’s no state tournament for these seniors, but our goal is to really set a tone for how we want this program to move into the future as well.”
Winthrop (5-1) hosts Saugus Thursday evening (6).
