MARBLEHEAD — As the North Shore continues to push through the winter months while dealing with COVID-19, local community organizations are stepping up to help in any way they can. For the Marblehead Democratic Town Committee, that means sponsoring a food drive to help people deal with the challenges of living through the coronavirus pandemic.
The food drive will be Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with drop-off donations accepted at the Marblehead Community Center, located at 10 Humphrey St.
This weekend’s food drive follows a number of other food drives that took place in the lead-up to Dr. Martin Luther King Day, when community organization, Swing Left North Shore/Cape Ann, dropped off bags of food for local food pantries in Lynn, Swampscott, Salem, Beverly and Gloucester.
“Responding to the urgent needs of our neighbors during this pandemic is the best possible way to honor the legacy of Martin Luther King and also mark this turning point in our democracy,” said Marblehead Democratic Town Committee Chair Renee Keaney. “By coming together, we can defeat COVID-19 and rebuild our economy for everyone.”
This food drive will be held to collect food, money, and gift cards for My Brother’s Table, a soup kitchen in Lynn and the Marblehead Food Pantry. In order of priority, the following donations are requested:
— Checks made out to My Brother’s Table or the Marblehead Food Pantry.
— Food and gift cards, which will be distributed to families in need.
The Marblehead Democratic Town Committee, which describes itself on its website as “(a group of) Marbleheaders committed to actively supporting Democratic values,” consists of 35 elected members, plus associate members. There is no limit on the number of associate members, which are elected by MDTC members. The glue that binds them is concern for social justice and the future of the country and the planet.
Democratic town committees are governed by the Massachusetts State Democratic Party, the Secretary of State’s office, the Office of Campaign and Political Finance and their own bylaws.
