LYNN — The St. Mary’s boys hockey team kicked off its 2020-2021 season with a bang Saturday night, notching a 10-1 win over Catholic Central League rival Bishop Fenwick at Connery Rink. The Spartans were paced by Colby Magliozzi and Kyle LoNigro, a pair of senior captains who each had a hat trick in the win.
“As coach, I couldn’t be happier with how the guys came out and played on the first night,” said St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee. “The guys have been excited to get back out on the ice and compete, and they really took advantage in this one.”
Magliozzi had three goals and one assist in the victory, while LoNigro had three goals. Sophomore Brady Bullock added two goals, while freshman Harrison Kinne had one goal and two assists and senior Dante D’Ambrosio had one goal and one assist. Junior Eric Toto had three assists, while junior Seamus Foley had one assist. Junior goalie Owen Giangrande earned the win in net.
Fenwick’s lone goal came from senior Cam Martin, who notched his 100th career point. Senior Gavin Belt had one assist.
The Spartans got off to an incredibly fast start, scoring on the very first shot of the game when Magliozzi found the five-hole to make it 1-0 just over one minute in. A few minutes later LoNigro got in on the action, scoring two goals in a span of three minutes to extend the Spartans’ lead to 3-0 in the blink of an eye. Bullock made it 4-0 on an assist from Magliozzi a few minutes later, then Magliozzi closed out the strong first period with his second goal to make it 5-0 at the break.
“We came out with a ton of energy right away,” said Lee. “This has been such a strange year and the guys have been itching to get back out there, and I think that energy just exploded once the game started.”
The second period wasn’t much different, as the Spartans added four more goals — one each from Magliozzi, LoNigro, D’Ambrosio and Kinne — to extend their lead even further.
After Bullock added his second goal of the game early in the third period to make it 10-0, Fenwick was finally able to get on the board. After earning a powerplay opportunity, the Crusaders capitalized when Belt hit Martin with a pass and Martin buried it for his 100th career point, making it 10-1.
Fenwick (0-1) is back in action next Saturday (6) when it hosts Lowell Catholic at McVann/O’Keefe Memorial Rink.
St. Mary’s (1-0) will face a tough test coming up next when it hosts Bridgewater-Raynham Wednesday evening (4) back at Connery.
“We’re really proud to be able to build such a strong schedule, and we know that we can’t take any nights off,” said Lee. “Bridgewater-Raynham is a strong Division 1 team and they’re going to come to play, so we’ll need to put this win behind us and focus on getting the job done Wednesday.”
