A mother and her young children are asking for help after a number of medical procedures earlier this year have put a sizable hole in the family’s pockets.
“I’m writing to you to ask for help with Christmas for my two boys, (ages 11 and 8),” this mother wrote Item Santa. “They are great boys, always helpful and kind.”
Although she was adamant she would not normally ask for help, being out of a job since the pandemic hit in March has been difficult for her.
Making matters worse, both mom and her husband endured surgeries this year — hers in March, and his in July. Because of the medical care the family received, they now need to pay an additional $350 per month, in addition to their regular expenses.
On top of that, the family’s oldest child just received braces, which has added yet another burden to the family’s finances.
“My hope is even if I get a gift for each of my boys we will be grateful, because we know that right now (times are) tough for everybody,” the mother wrote. “I would like to thank you in advance for taking the time to consider my family for your help.”
The Item Santa fund helps to make the holidays brighter for those in need. Launched in 1966, the annual fundraiser is run in conjunction with the Salvation Army, which coordinates the program by sorting out requests, purchasing the toys and clothing. It accepts all donations, no matter how small.
For more than a half century, Item Santa has drawn on the goodwill of so many to lift people from want and worry into the holiday’s bright warm glow. Providing that helping hand could not be more vital this year with the need so great during the months-long pandemic.
Item Santa has counted for decades on the help of so many. This year, maybe like no other, it needs the help of so many.
