LYNN — Tenants, neighbors and a group of insurance adjusters gathered outside of the two-family house 54 Addison Ave. at 6:15 p.m. Sunday following an electrical fire on the second floor.
Lynn Fire Department Captain Joe Zukas said that they received a call at 5:29 p.m. to report the blaze. The Fire Department was on the scene shortly after that and had put it out by 5:55 p.m.
No injuries were reported.
The fire began in a freak accident involving the lights in the living room on the second floor of the home, where the owners live.
“We were in the kitchen,” said one of the owners, who preferred not to be named. “We had a space heater going—then the heat went off, and the lights went off. We started hearing popping noises from the lights in the living room.”
“We waited a little bit,” he continued. “And then the lights fell down. They fell on the table and then the whole thing broke out.”
“And then you see the flames and the sparks,” said another owner.
They reported that they hadn’t experienced any similar electrical issues since they had moved into the house about two years ago. They live in the second floor unit, but also rent to tenants downstairs.
This fire felt like deja vu for the owners, long-time Lynn residents, who experienced a similar fire on a December night 14 years ago in the house they lived in at the time.
Most of the damage from the fire was in the ceiling, which had to be taken down by the Fire Department to ensure that the fire didn’t extend. Zukas explained that there was also some water damage to the home.
Zukas reported that the house was still habitable and that the owners and tenants were able to return to the home later that night.
