BOSTON — A Lynn mail carrier has been arrested and charged with stealing mail on at least 21 occasions, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.
Angela Gomez, a 40-year-old U.S. Postal employee who lives in Lynn, was charged with a criminal complaint for theft of mail by an employee and appeared in federal court last Friday.
Prosecutors said Gomez was charged following information that postal inspectors had received, which included multiple instances of customers in Lynn reporting missing mail. In one instance, a USPS customer had reported that an expected Lilly Pulitzer gift card had never arrived in the mail, according to the U.S. Attorney’s office.
A further investigation revealed that Gomez, a USPS city carrier assistant, handled that customer’s route and that the gift card had been used last January for purchases that were delivered to Gomez’s then-home address and that the corresponding email associated with the purchase belonged to Gomez, prosecutors said.
The discovery prompted surveillance of Gomez performing her duties, which revealed that she rifled through and stole mail on 21 separate occasions, prosecutors said.
If convicted, Gomez could face up to five years in prison, three years of supervised release, and a $250,000 fine, prosecutors said.
