LYNN — Lynn has reported 218 new coronavirus cases since last Friday, a surge that included another 43 new cases on Wednesday.
While numbers are surging statewide and across the country, Lynn’s spike has been particularly noticeable locally.
Lynn has consistently averaged a double-digit daily case increase in the past several weeks, but the daily spike has nearly doubled since last week.
Since last Friday, Lynn has reported three days of a 40-plus surge in cases. In addition to the 43 new cases reported on Wednesday, the city also saw 40 new cases each on Monday and last Friday, according to city data.
Numbers dipped a bit this past Tuesday when 27 new cases were reported.
As of Wednesday, Lynn had 5,568 cases and 122 deaths. A total of 484 cases remain active and 4,962 have recovered, according to city data.
Mayor Thomas M. McGee said the virus surge could be due to a number of factors. He said the state is having a hard time pinpointing about 40 to 50 percent of the community spread in Massachusetts through contact tracing, but Gov. Charlie Baker said this week that the surge in new cases is driven by people under 30.
Baker urged people to stop hosting big parties. Virus rates are surging among young people, according to a Boston Herald report.
In Lynn, McGee said the city’s demographics are such that a lot of people live in close proximity to one another. With the weather changing, people are spending more time indoors, he added.
“I think people are letting their guard down with family and friends they don’t spend a lot of time with,” said McGee. “I think people are getting fatigued. I understand this has been hard, but we can’t lose sight of what we’ve been facing and how we can work together to keep our community as safe as possible.”
Numbers are also surging in Revere, which reported another 27 new cases and an additional death on Wednesday. The city now has 3,280 cases and 109 deaths, according to the city website.
In Peabody, 25 new cases have been reported since Monday to bring the city’s caseload to 1,479. The city’s death toll is 188 and 1,072 people have recovered from the virus, according to the health department.
Six new cases were reported in Nahant to bring the town’s caseload to 61. Six people have died, according to the town website.
Numbers remained the same in Lynnfield (174 cases, 14 deaths) and were not updated in Marblehead, Saugus or Swampscott on Wednesday.
As of Monday, Swampscott had 188 cases and 11 deaths. Marblehead (292 cases, 30 deaths) and Saugus (808 cases, 43 deaths) have not provided updated numbers since last Thursday and Wednesday respectively.
