The Lynn Babe Ruth 15s had beaten Reading twice during the newly established “COVID Games,” but the third time wasn’t the charm Thursday night. After struggling offensively, the Lynn 15s fell to Reading 3-0 in the North final. With the loss, the Lynn 15s are eliminated from the event.
The Lynn 15s were made up of Brady Bullock, Yordy Contreras, Denielle Ortiz, Brendan Falasca, Knico Ramirez, Shea Palmer, Christian Spates, Doran Benzan, Chanel Gutierrez, Tyler Maynard, William Devereaux, Dariel Echavarria, TJ Walsh, Cole Finnigan and John Diaz. Christian Burt served as manager for the Lynn 15s, while Liam Devereaux, James Reiling and Dayshon Anderson served as coaches.
“It was a privilege to coach these young men,” said Burt. “They did everything we asked them to do, they fought and played hard. With the loss, it is what it is.”
Contreras earned the start on the mound for the Lynn 15s, but he got off to a shaky start and ended up taking the loss. After giving up a single to Reading’s Ben Wright, Contreras walked the next two batters to load the bases. Next up came outfielder Jack Viera, who smacked a two-run single to give Reading a 2-0 lead.
Lynn made good contact throughout the night but the hits kept finding the Reading defenders, who were making plays all over the field.
Ryan Mulvey started on the mound for Reading and he was outstanding all night, scattering five hits over seven innings of work.
Lynn threatened in the third inning, but Mulvey notched a key strikeout before Brendan Falasca lined out to the shortstop to end the inning.
In other Lynn Babe Ruth news, the North Final Game for the Lynn 13s — the only Lynn team left in the “COVID Games” — against Newton in Newton has been postponed to Friday night (8). The winner of that game will host the state championship game Sunday.
