MARBLEHEAD — Two Marblehead-based organizations are teaming up to host a community clean-up later this month.
SPUR and Sustainable Marblehead will task teams of volunteers with cleaning up harbors, beaches and parks in Lynn, Marblehead, Salem and Swampscott on Sunday, Sept. 20, from 10:30-11:30 a.m. The Land & Sea Cleanup, which launched last year, is being held in honor of International Coastal Clean-Up Day.
Volunteers are welcome to join on foot, or by kayak, paddleboard or boat, to clean up trash and debris left behind from “summer fun” or that has washed ashore from afar in 21 local parks and beaches, according to SPUR.
Last year’s clean-up, which drew more than 150 volunteers, was focused exclusively on Marblehead, but has expanded to three additional communities that SPUR serves this year.
“We do clean-ups throughout the year,” said Bryan Lamoreau, volunteer and event drive manager for SPUR. “Last year was an opportunity to partner with a larger organization here in Marblehead that wanted to pull our forces together and do a massive cleanup.
“Every year, there’s a need and we wanted to continue to ensure we clean up the areas that need it.”
Lamoreau said the two organizations have tried to target areas that are most in need of clean-up this summer.
In Marblehead, the areas that will be cleaned up will include the Marblehead Harbor, Children’s Island, Gas House Beach, Devereux Beach and Grace Oliver Beach.
Other chosen areas include Forest River Park in Salem, High Rock Park in Lynn, and Phillips Park and Phillips Beach in Swampscott.
Lamoreau said volunteers will be required to wear face masks and adhere to social distancing throughout the day. No more than 10 volunteers will be assigned to each area, he said.
“It’s a wonderful thing to bring together community members to clean up the town and our oceans,” said Lamoreau. “We would love for more people to join us and help clean up our land and sea in the area.”
