The MIAA COVID-19 Task Force approved new safety modifications for field hockey last week, changing the look of the sport for this year in a dramatic way. Instead of the usual 10-on-10 field of play, the Task Force instead approved 7-on-7 play for the fall 2020 season. There will also be no penalty corners or stick inspections this fall.
The latest field hockey-specific safety modifications approved by the COVID-19 Task Force are:
- The number of players on the field will be 7 versus 7 (must have a goalie).
- No penalty corners – fouls in circle would be 25-yard hits.
- Free Hits – all players must be five yards away.
- No bully’s – it will be alternating possession.
- Four balls must be placed behind each goal and on the opposite sideline on cones (no ball girls/boys).
- No pregame stick inspection – coach is responsible to verify that all participants have legal equipment (stick, goggles, mask).
- Officials shall use alternative whistles such as electronic whistles; air horns are permissible.
- Substitutions will take place at mid-field (no contact between players).
- The requirements for mouth guards and goggles remain in place.
