MARBLEHEAD — Those who are concerned about the future of Marblehead Harbor can keep themselves apprised of what’s happening with it by monitoring a meeting on the subject Monday night.
“The Future of Marblehead Harbor Climate Adaptation: Themes and Concepts” will be discussed Monday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. It will be a remote meeting on the GoToMeeting site, which can be accessed from either a computer or a smartphone.
Kirk Bosma of the Woods Hole Group will present conceptualized adaptation design approaches for four areas around Marblehead Harbor to reduce damaging coastal flooding, based on recent experiences and on climate 10, 30 and 50 years from now.
The event is sponsored by Salem Sound Coastwatch, a group whose mission is to “protect and improve the environmental quality of Salem Sound and its watershed.”
The Woods Hole Group is an international environmental services and products organization based in Massachusetts, and with offices in Delaware, Maryland, and Texas. It offers a range of coastal, ecological, and oceanographic consulting services, along with products for collecting ocean measurements, ocean forecasting, tracking wildlife with satellite communications, and vessel monitoring systems (VMS) for fisheries management.
The harbor has been the subject of ongoing concern among environmental groups.
“Sustainable Marblehead” has put the harbor on its radar, announcing efforts two months ago to keep it clean even as it extended a wide-ranging invitation for people to join a discussion on ways to protect the harbor.
Sustainable Marblehead is “dedicated to empowering and connecting our town’s residents, businesses and leaders to create a healthy, sustainable and resilient community,” the group’s mission statement says. “Our vision is a vibrant and engaged community actively addressing the climate crisis to ensure our town and planet are habitable and safe for us and for future generations.”
Sustainable Marblehead has reached out to local boatyards to find ways to recycle marine shrink wrap used to cover boats during the winter. A recycling bin for boat shrink wrap is located at the town transfer station, 5 Woodfin Terrace.
