Moulton delivers for 6th Congressional District

Even in an age of global pandemic and shifting economic fortunes, General Electric remains Lynn’s lead employer and U.S. Representative Seth W. Moulton has delivered during his tenure in Congress for GE and for Lynn.

Contract values for the River Works support Moulton’s contention that he has helped steer $1.2 billion in workforce investment to Lynn since first being elected in 2014 to represent the 6th Congressional District.

That amount includes the $517 million next-generation helicopter engine contract Moulton helped land for GE’s aviation division in 2019.

Since defeating fellow Democrat and former 6th District Congressman John F. Tierney in the 2014 Democratic primary, Salem resident Moulton has been an energetic, occasionally rebellious, actor on the national political stage.

He mounted a short-lived presidential campaign earlier this year that barely registered a blip in the polls and challenged Nancy Pelosi’s return as Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives.

That challenge understandably earned Moulton criticism in his district. But the Marine and Iraq war veteran worked hard for fellow Democrats during the important 2018 congressional elections. Moulton crisscrossed the country campaigning for Democrats.

He also carved out a progressive track record in Congress with his call for abolishing the Electoral College; providing funding for substance abuse treatment; supporting LGBTQ veterans; calling for police reform and pushing to provide free community college education.

Not surprisingly, veterans’ needs are a top Moulton priority and he has worked throughout his congressional tenure to improve what he views as inadequate services for fellow veterans. The Faster Care for Veterans Act and other legislation bears Moulton’s imprint.

Fellow Democrats challenging him in the Sept. 1 primary are Angus G. McQuilken, a Topsfield resident with experience leading the state Life Sciences Center, and Topsfield resident and mental-health-reform advocate Jamie M. Belsito.

They have well thought-out reform platforms for the economy, the environment and social justice. They also bring energy and passion to their campaigns and debate stages they have shared with Moulton.

But Moulton has done the work and he continues to deliver for the 6th District.
