BOXFORD — When you’re the only player to shoot par in the final round of a tournament, you’re usually going to be in pretty good shape.
Such was the case for Ferncroft Country Club’s Jared Mscisz Wednesday afternoon, as the Danvers native shot a score of 1-under 71 in the final round to take home the title at the 45th annual North Shore Amateur at Far Corner Golf Club. His total score for the tournament was 75-71-146.
“I knew I had to go low (Wednesday) in order to have a chance, so it was great to come out and get the job done,” said Mscisz. “I was able to go out there and hit some good shots and make some putts.”
Mscisz, who recently was named Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Year following his freshman season at Southern New Hampshire University, opened the 36-hole stroke play tournament with a 3-over 75 on Tuesday, but he knew that he was close to a breakthrough.
“I honestly have been playing a little shaky all summer, so it was good to come out and play a solid round to put myself in position to win,” said Mscisz.
He came out on Wednesday and was able to attack where he needed to, making birdie on the par-4 10th hole en route to his 71.
“There were some tough pins out there for sure, but it wasn’t as windy as (Tuesday), so it was a little easier,” said Mscisz. “I did a good job of staying below the hole most of the day and that gave me a few good looks at birdie.
“I made a great birdie on 10 with a long putt after hitting a great shot in there, so that gave me some good momentum,” said Mscisz.
With the North Shore Amateur now out of the way, Mscisz is turning his attention to next week’s Massachusetts Amateur Public Links Championship, set to be held at Gannon Golf Club.
“I haven’t played Gannon much recently, but I think it’s going to be a great tournament,” said Mscisz, who used to compete at Gannon back in his high school days at Danvers High. “Anytime we can go and play something locally like that it’s always fun, so I hope I can go up there and play well.”
Other local golfers who finished well at the 45th North Shore Amateur included Ferncroft’s Mike Holbrook in fourth place (76-77-153), Salem Country Club’s Ryan Daly in a tie for fifth place (77-78-155), Kernwood Country Club’s Max Emmerich in ninth place (72-86-158), Olde Salem Greens’ Tim Richmond in a tie for 14th place (83-78-161), Kernwood’s Robert Parisi in a tie for 18th place (83-79-162), Olde Salem Greens’ Ethan Doyle in 20th place (81-82-163), Tedesco Country Club’s Brendan Locke in a tie for 22nd place (80-87-167), Gannon Golf Club’s Jay Fiste in a tie for 22nd place (79-88-167), Olde Salem Greens’ Nick Angeramo in a tie for 26th place (82-86-168), Ferncroft’s Colin Natale in 29th place (82-87-169) and Salem State’s Ian Paskowski in a tie for 31st place (84-88-172).
