As the calendar turns to August, Tedesco Country Club is excited to finally host its flagship tournament, the Tedesco Four-Ball Invitational, this weekend. This year will be the 81st edition of the Four-Ball, an event that Tedesco membership looks forward to every year.
The format of the competition is four-ball, best ball match play, with 64 teams of two going head-to-head in single elimination games. The tournament is six total rounds spanning the weekend. At the end of it all, one team will come away with the title.
Last year, a team of Marblehead residents in Greg Mahan and Matt McCreedy came away with the trophy after a stellar four days of golf.
The local duo cruised through the final round, making birdies on five holes to go up seven and clinched the win after the 12th hole against the team of Chris White and Kevin Rogers. Mahan and McCreedy shot 4-under through 12 holes.
Mahan and McCreedy dropped the first hole and halved the second before settling in. The pair wouldn’t lose a hole for the rest of the afternoon. Mahan led the way with birdies on holes three, five and nine. McCreedy wasn’t far behind with a pair of birdies, including one on the par-four 12th hole, to seal the win.
After a few weeks of sweltering weather and little rain, the grounds crew at Tedesco has had to put in some serious work to keep the golf course in top shape for the annual tournament. The weather this weekend calls for slightly lower temperatures than in previous days, but there is also a 55 percent chance of thunderstorms on Sunday afternoon.
After the Four-Ball wraps up at the end of this weekend, there will still be plenty of dates worth writing down on the Tedesco calendar. The men’s and ladies’ club championships have still yet to be played, and the club’s final big member-guest tournament — The Les Dunn Memorial Tournament — is also still on the schedule.
