St. John’s Prep alum Nick Maccario shot up the leaderboard in the second round of the 91st New England Amateur Championship Wednesday with a 3-under 67 at Concord Country Club. Paired with his first-round score of 72, Maccario now sits a 1-under for the tournament — good enough for a tie for second place, two shots behind leader John Broderick (Dedham C&PC).
Maccario, a member at Bradford Country Club, had a very clean card in Wednesday’s round, going bogey-free with three birdies after starting on the 10th tee. Birdies on the 11th and 13th holes helped him open up with a 33 on the front nine, then a birdie on the par-4 eighth hole helped him shoot 34 on his back nine, posting a score of 67 on the day.
Former St. Mary’s star and Kernwood Country Club member Christian Emmerich also sits close to the top of the leaderboard despite having a so-so day. Coming off a strong 67 in the first round, Emmerich struggled out of the gate with two bogeys and a double-bogey on the front nine to shoot 39 on the way out. But after his bogey on the sixth hole, Emmerich rebounded with four straight pars before making a birdie on the 11th hole. He finished off his round with seven straight pars, finishing the day with a score of 73. Emmerich now sits in a tie for seventh place at even-par for the tournament.
Another former Prep star also made a move up the leaderboard on Wednesday, as Chris Francoeur (Amesbury G&CC) shot a 2-over 72 to move into a tie for 26th place. Francoeur came out with a blistering score of 32 on his front nine, making three birdies after starting his day on the 10th hole. But he stumbled on the way in, making two bogeys and two double-bogeys on his back nine to shoot 40 and close the day with a 72.
Swampscott native and Salem Country Club member Steven DiLisio shot a score of 3-over 73 for the second straight day, finishing the second round in a tie for 32nd place. After opening the day with a birdie on the first hole, DiLisio never got comfortable. He made bogeys on the third, sixth, 10th, 11th and 15th holes, only offsetting that with a birdie on the 13th hole to finish the day at 73.
With all four local players making the cut, they will head into the final day of competition to play a 36-hole marathon Thursday.
