SAUGUS — Police say two elderly women were seriously hurt Tuesday when their golf cart overturned during a bout of bad weather at Saugus’ Cedar Glen Golf Course.
Lieutenant Damien Drella of the Saugus Fire Department said the incident occurred just after 11 a.m., when the victims and a third friend in a separate cart attempted to make it back to the club house before heavy rains hit.
“They were trying to get back and there was a very steep hill they were going down when they lost control,” Drella said. “It looked to me like they may have veered off the path a little bit and one of their tires hit a rock, which flipped the cart on its side.”
Drella said two of the women were initially trapped beneath one of the carts, but their friend managed to free them before paramedics arrived.
Because of the location where the women crashed and the wet conditions of the golf course, Drella said the rescue mission took part in several steps, with the women transported one at a time to two separate area hospitals.
“I didn’t want to make the decision to have everybody go out there and have two ambulances stuck in the mud and have two seriously injured people who we couldn’t transport,” Drella said. “We were able to work with the people at the golf course, who made some golf carts and equipment available to us.”
The more seriously injured of the two was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital while the other woman was taken to Winchester Hospital. The third woman refused treatment at the scene.
Drella said he would likely classify the two women as being in “serious but stable” condition.
