LYNN — It was a day of contradictions on Monday, as the city reached a grim milestone by surpassing 100 coronavirus deaths, but reported zero new cases for the first time since the outbreak began.
Three additional deaths have been reported in Lynn since last Friday to bring the city’s death toll to 101, according to city data.
With zero new cases on Monday, the city’s caseload is now 3,660, with 713 active cases — 2,847 people have recovered from the virus.
Although case numbers have been on the decline, Lynn’s death toll continues to rise, a development Mayor Thomas M. McGee and the city’s public health director Michele Desmarais addressed in a joint statement on Monday.
“The deaths of 100 Lynn residents due to COVID-19 is a tragic milestone. Our thoughts are with all those who have lost loved ones to this terrible virus. Today serves as a sobering reminder that COVID-19 is still taking its toll on our community. Everyone must continue to do their part, wearing masks and practicing social distancing, to prevent further spread of COVID-19 and keep the City of Lynn healthy,” the statement said.
The vast majority of virus fatalities have been elderly residents, with 83 of the city’s deaths occurring among people aged 60 and older. Another nine deaths have been residents between the ages of 51 and 60, according to data compiled by the mayor’s office.
Only two people under the age of 40 have died from the virus, one of whom was between the ages of 21 and 30. Seven residents between the ages of 41 and 50 have died, according to city data.
