MARBLEHEAD — The Class of 2020 and High School Principal Daniel Bauer shared four years together and they are not going to let the last two months define that time for them.
“They were a really great class and my first class I was able to see through here since I came in 2016. They’ve really changed the school culture here. They were always great with community service and no matter what happens, that’s what they’ll be remembered for,” Bauer said.
That community service spread around and outside Marblehead High started with students making the high school a place where everyone was welcome.
“They always did such a great job welcoming freshmen in,” Bauer said. “And they helped a number of entities throughout town, raising money. They donated blood during blood drives and also spent time tutoring kids in the younger classes.”
The Magicians also had plenty of highlights during extracurricular activities like the arts and sports. Some shows and events may have been forced to cancel this spring but the Class of 2020 still left its mark.
“They found tremendous success in the world of art,” Bauer said. “We had a virtual art show this year, which is a big deal for the students including Drama Fest. Plenty of our students took home a lot of awards as well.
“In athletics we had a lot of strong teams every season,” Bauer said. “All in all, there was a lot for this class to be proud of in their extracurricular activities.”
Whether it was on the field or in the pool, Marblehead athletics found plenty of that success throughout the past four years.
The swimming team couldn’t be stopped in recent years, taking home back-to-back Northeastern Conference titles.
On the football field the class of 2020 had a Thanksgiving to remember. The girls topped Swampscott in the powder puff game while the football team also topped the Big Blue with a last second touchdown to end their season on a high note.
And the boys alpine skiing team proved to be the best on the slopes with a state championship win, the class of 2020’s third state championship in a row in boys alpine skiing.
“I have to say, it may be a common refrain throughout the local schools but our seniors have shown so much perseverance and resilience throughout this,” Bauer said, adding, “They’ve lost a lot of activities like musicals, concerts, arts and obviously spring sports. Now they’re missing out on milestone events like prom, senior week and graduation. Throughout it all they did a great job not letting it get them down. Everyone was faced with unusual circumstances and they got through it together.”
The Class of 2020 included student leaders like class president Reid Tully, valedictorian Jillian Lederman, and Salutatorian Hayden Miller.
On June 5, the Class of 2020 was able to celebrate and show their school spirit again with a car parade at Marblehead High School.
