LYNN — A $2.5 million roadwork reconstruction project is underway in West Lynn, which includes revamping what Mayor Thomas M. McGee called a “crazy intersection” near Market Basket.
The work, paid for through a MassWorks Infrastructure grant, includes the construction of a second roundabout to improve access around the supermarket and other businesses in the area.
Over the next several months, crews from Andover-based J. Tropeano, Inc., a city contractor selected through a bid process, will reconstruct the intersection of Federal, Marian and Waterhill streets, known as Agganis Square, into a single-lane roundabout.
Currently, the intersection is a bit “crazy,” said McGee. The safety improvements aim to create a better flow for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists, he said.
“It’s not directly straight across,” said McGee. “It’s been hard to navigate for a long time with traffic coming from four directions. With the work, it’s going to make it seamless.”
Reconfiguring the Agganis Square intersection is not the only improvement underway, McGee said, explaining that additional intersections will also be reconstructed.
Federal and Boston streets will see improvements aimed at helping the flow of traffic on Boston Street. The reconstruction is meant to improve sight lines of motorists traveling down Boston, McGee said.
The connection on Federal and Marion streets will be upgraded on either end as part of the reconstruction of the Boston, Marion and Federal street intersection, he said.
Other area improvements at the three selected intersections will include sidewalk rehabilitation and wheelchair ramp reconstruction, landscaping, streetlight upgrades, and the installation of traffic signals, according to a bid document for the project.
“It’s an upgrade for flow of traffic as well as safety, so we’re really happy to see that work started and look forward to completion,” said McGee. “It’s really going to be a nice improvement down there.”
