After a record-breaking senior season on the ice, Peabody/Lynnfield senior forward Sammie Mirasolo has been named the 2019-2020 Item Player of the Year for girls hockey.
Mirasolo, who won the Northeastern Hockey League MVP for the second straight season this year, set program records in both goals (29) and points (46) in her senior campaign. A three-time Herald All-Scholastic and a two-time NEHL MVP, Mirasolo finishes her career as the all-time leading scorer in Peabody/Lynnfield history with 144 points (90 goals, 54 assists). Mirasolo was a four-year starter and a two-year captain for the Tanners.
There were also five players named to the 2019-2020 All-Item team, with Kelsey Sullivan (St. Mary’s), Jeny Collins (Peabody/Lynnfield), Jen Flynn (Peabody/Lynnfield), Gabby Davern (Bishop Fenwick) and Cailyn Wesley (Bishop Fenwick) earning All-Item honors.
Sullivan, a two-time Catholic Central League all-star, was a stalwart on the blue line for St. Mary’s this winter. Sullivan was a key part of the Spartans’ area-best defense (they allowed just over one goal per game), and her offensive contributions included three goals and 16 assists. Also a CCL All-Star on the lacrosse field, Sullivan was preparing for her senior spring season before it was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Collins set a program record for wins (15) during her senior season with Peabody/Lynnfield, earning NEHL All-Star honors in the process. Collins put up a stellar 1.62 goals against average, recorded three shutouts and made 494 total saves. Her .936 save percentage was the best in all the North Shore in 2019-2020. Collins finishes her Tanners career second on the program’s all-time list in wins (26) and shutouts (9).
Flynn finished third in the North Shore in scoring as a junior this winter, notching 12 goals and 14 assists for 26 points with the Tanners. An All-Conference pick in the NEHL, Flynn had a penchant for scoring shorthanded goals when her team needed them most. As she gets set to enter her senior year, Flynn — a Lynnfield native — has career totals of 38 goals, 38 assists and 76 points.
Davern was a scoring and playmaking machine for Fenwick this winter, leading the Crusaders with totals of 18 goals and nine assists for 27 points — her second straight year leading Fenwick in scoring. Only a junior, Davern is on track to notch her 100th career point early in the 2020-2021 season. She currently has 91 career points (52 goals, 39 assists).
Wesley didn’t show any signs of rust after missing her entire junior season with a leg injury, helping lead the Crusaders to its best-ever regular season record. She won 11 games as a senior, making 409 total saves with a 2.11 goals against average and a 0.911 save percentage. Wesley made over 1,000 saves in her career at Fenwick.
Also earning Item All-Star honors for the 2019-2020 season were Carolyn Garofoli and Reilly Ganter (Peabody/Lynnfield); Sam Porazinski, Maggie Pierce and Lexie Turner (St. Mary’s); Lauren Diranian and Grace Morey (Bishop Fenwick); Abby Kalinowski, Madison Twombly and Brooke Brennan (Marblehead); Summer Tallent, Mia Martucci, Julia Holmes and Emma Holmes (Winthrop).
