PEABODY — They say chicken soup is good for the soul — and, of course, the immune system. We could all certainly use a little boost to both right now.
That’s why residents of Northeast Arc housing were understandably delighted to see deliveries of soup and chili arriving at their doorsteps thanks to Kettle Cuisine. The Lynn-based company, which handcrafts fresh, premium soups, sauces, sides, entrees and broth concentrates for foodservice operators and grocery retailers, has long been committed to helping feed and nurture the hungry in its local community. With so many sheltering in place through the COVID-19 epidemic, its commitment has never waned.
“We’ve had excess product and we know people are out there who need help,” said Alan Gilbert, Kettle Cuisine’s Health and Safety manager. “We try to be good neighbors in our community. There’s no reason anyone should need to go hungry.”
Suzanne Ryan, director of Volunteer Services at Northeast Arc, loaded up her backseat with 15 cases of soup and chili and distributed the food to 24 group homes in Northeast Arc’s residential program. The organization, which is dedicated to empowering people of all abilities to reach their full potential, provides supported living, but also assists those living independently in the community, in shared living environments and in specialized housing.
“All of our homes certainly appreciated it,” said Ryan. “It’s been a wonderful thing for me to stop by, wave and bring them something delicious. I know the staff and the folks living there, so it’s more than just dropping off. It’s making the connection with them. And our staff are really doing a tremendous job of holding things together.”
“The agencies and their employees are going above and beyond the call of duty,” said Gilbert. “They’re the ones who deserve the thanks, for all the great work they do.”
Northeast Arc has been fortunate to receive other donations of food, masks and even ice cream (from Treadwell’s in Peabody) during this trying time. And Kettle Cuisine has donated soup to a number of other organizations as well, such as My Brother’s Table, the Salvation Army and Bridgewell. Additionally, the company has partnered with the cities of Lynn and Lawrence to assist families in need. Employees have also dropped off donations for emergency responders at Lynn police and fire stations.
“We want them going home to their families safe, healthy and fed,” said Gilbert.
An admirable objective, indeed.
