Boston College women’s hockey sophomore Cayla Barnes and freshman Hannah Bilka were both honored by the New England Hockey Writers Association for their 2019-20 seasons, the organization announced on Tuesday. Both Barnes and Bilka were named to the All-New England Division I team.
Barnes put up 23 points on six goals and 17 assists and finished first in Hockey East and third in the nation with 103 blocked shots. Her eight power-play assists in conference play tied for second overall and for first among blue liners in Hockey East. Barnes’ 108 shots on goal marked the fourth-most among league blue liners. The Eastvale, Calif. native had a hand in four game-winning goals for BC, scoring one and assisting on three others. Barnes, who had at least one point in eight out of the first 10 games of the season, was named to the U.S. National Team roster that was slated to compete at the 2020 International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women’s World Championships
Bilka, who was named the National Rookie of the Year and the Hockey East Rookie of the Year, led all rookies in the country in total points per game (1.13), assists per game (0.71) and shots on goal per game (4.06) during the regular season and tied for first in shots on goal (126). The forward went on to finish the year with 37 points on 14 goals and 23 assists. Bilka had 10 multi-point games, three multi-goal games and five multi-assist outings on the year, with her 10 total multi-point games sitting second in the nation among rookies while her four three-plus point outings tied for first overall among rookies. The Coppell, Texas native also earned spots on the USCHO All-Rookie Team as well as the conference All-Rookie Team and the all-conference Second Team.
