LYNN — Lynn police said a 29-year-old woman shot on Whiting Street Tuesday night is in critical condition, but expected to survive her injuries.
Police Lt. Michael Kmiec did not identify the woman, but said in a statement a Lynn man and a Dorchester man were arrested in connection with the 8:39 p.m. shooting off Lynn Common.
Officers responding to the shooting found civilians treating the woman for multiple gunshot wounds at 33 Whiting St. Lynn Police and Lynn Fire treated the victim and she was eventually taken to Mass General Hospital.
Kmiec stated that a witness followed the suspects’ vehicle as it fled Whiting Street and provided dispatchers with its location.
Several Lynn units attempted to stop the suspects, but the operator refused to stop, leading the officers on a pursuit into Saugus. They were pursued onto Webb Place in Saugus where three suspects ran. Lynn and Saugus Police took two of the suspects into custody after chasing them. The third suspect has not been taken into custody.
Augustin Gomez, 23, 185 North Common St., was arrested and charged with assault to murder and 13 weapons and motor vehicle charges. Lexus Perez, 25 was arrested and charged with assault to murder and drug and weapons charges.
Essex District Attorney’s spokeswoman Carrie Kimball said Gomez and Perez were both arraigned by telephone before Judge Cesar A. Archilla. Gomez was arraigned on two separate dockets relating to different incidents, including the shooting and a domestic violence incident earlier the same day.
Perez was arraigned on one docket relating to the shooting. Nelson ordered the pair held without bail pending a dangerousness hearing on April 15.
The shooting capped a day of violence in the city, which included an attempted armed street robbery and two other shots fired incidents that resulted in damage to a car and home.
Shortly before 4 p.m. Tuesday, police driving by Western and Tracy avenues were flagged down by a male victim who said he was nearly robbed at gunpoint by two men.
Two suspects had approached the man, said something the victim couldn’t make out and pointed a gun at him. At about the same time, a police cruiser had been driving down the street, which may have spooked the suspects, Kmiec said.
The victim alerted the officers as the suspects were running away. There was no robbery committed and police are investigating the incident. No arrests have been made.
There were two other shootings on Tuesday, which resulted in property damage, but no additional victims.
Shortly before 3:30 p.m., a car’s tire was struck by a gunshot at 548 Summer St., and less than two hours after a woman was shot, gunfire broke out again on High Rock Street, Kmiec said.
In that instance, an argument appears to have led to a man firing multiple rounds, which resulted in damage to a home, 43 High Rock, Kmiec said.
“It’s not clear what the man was shooting at,” said Kmiec. “It appears there was some type of disturbance between multiple people in that area prior to the shots being fired.”
No arrests have been made in either incident.
Kmiec said things had been “very quiet” lately, in terms of criminal activity, and police are investigating what prompted the sudden string of violence.
“At this time, we have no explanation for it,” said Kmiec. “As these investigations go, maybe there will be some reason for it, but at this point, it’s unknown.”
