REVERE — The Lynn Jets and Revere boys hockey teams traded leads in the first period, but in the end the Patriots capped off the year with a 7-4 win in both team’s season finale at Cronin Skating Rink Monday.
The Jets started the night off well with an early 2-1 lead in the first, but Revere responded with the next six goals to put Lynn in a hole it couldn’t climb out of.
“I thought we had a really good start,” Lynn coach Mike Roberts said. “We buried two quick ones to take a 2-1 lead and then the same mistakes crept in later.”
Matt Devin, who is Lynn’s only player competing in the Northeastern Conference All-Star game this Saturday at Salem State, led the Jets with a pair of goals. Lynn’s seniors also ended their Jets careers on a high note. John MacDonald scored in the first period and Matt Leonard assisted a goal from Luke Rao in the final seconds.
“Luke scoring with four seconds left is a good way for him to finish it off,” Roberts said. “I tried to keep the four seniors out there for the last couple minutes and give them that honor. They worked hard. It wasn’t an easy season for them. They could have packed it in earlier but we had four guys that loved to play hockey and they continued to play. Kudos to them, I appreciate everything they’ve done for us.”
Senior Eric Platcow led the way for the Patriots with a goal and three assists. Matt D’Annolfo and Gerry Visconti each scored two goals for Revere while Kevin Ivany and Alexio Trichilo each had one.
The win capped off Revere’s first year competing in the Greater Boston League and the first year the Patriots were joined by players from Matignon.
“Our seniors wanted to make the tournament so bad and we came four points shy,” Revere coach Joe Ciccarello said. “But they’re all great kids and the Matignon kids that we met for the first time this year integrated well. I thought our kids did a great job of integrating them and they felt like they were apart of the team and the family. That just shows you how great of kids they are.”
Revere started the day off with Trichilo’s one-timer goal in the first few minutes, but Lynn was quick to bounce back.
MacDonald skated to a breakaway and finished it off to tie things up. Devin capitalized on a turnover a few minutes later and scored a shorthanded tally to give Lynn a 2-1 lead.
But that same Lynn penalty turned into a 5-on-3 chance for Revere soon after and Visconti cashed in to tie the game at 2-2. Visconti scored again in the final seconds of the first to give the Patriots a 3-2 lead.
Things started to snowball for Lynn in the second, with Revere scoring four unanswered goals to go ahead 7-2.
Devin added a power-play goal late in the second and, after a defensive third, Rao’s goal capped off the season.
“We always had a decent effort,” Roberts said. “Kudos to our kids in the locker room that kept churning no matter what the circumstance was this year. One takeaway is that they came to the rink every day and had fun. Unfortunately you can’t win them all, but the takeaway is that no matter what the adverse situation is, you have to plug through and finish what you started.”
