It was a struggle, but Bishop Fenwick’s girls basketball team had enough to get past Peabody Sunday, 39-29, in the opening round of the Larry McIntire IAABO Board 130 Classic at Beverly High.
Both teams struggled to score in the first half, which ended with the Crusaders on top 14-12. Fenwick stretched the lead to 30-21 after three and coasted home. Sophomore guard Maria Orfanos scored a game-high 13 points to lead the Crusaders (13-6), while Emily Carney had six points for the Tanners (7-12).
Beverly 70, Revere 48
In the IAABO nightcap, the Anderson sisters — Hailey (24) and Sydney (14) — combined for 38 points, while Tia Bernard added 20 for the Panthers (11-8), who will take on Fenwick in the championship game Monday (4:15). Skyla DeSimone had 19 points for Revere (4-15) and Erika Cheever had 13.
The championship game will feature a sibling rivalry as Viana Kotchian is a senior at Beverly and her sister, Morginn, is a freshman at Fenwick.
Classical 48, Somerville 42
Amber Crayton led the way for the Rams with 21 points, followed by Jean Gupton Morrison with 12.
Classical is at Winthrop Thursday (2).
BOYS BASKETBALL
Larry McIntire IAABO Board 130 Classic
Gloucester 74, Bishop Fenwick 66
Marcus Montagnino exploded for 36 points to lead the defending champion Fishermen (12-7). Jason Romans and Max Grenert scored 17 points apiece for Fenwick (10-8).
Beverly 75, Masconomet 63
In the IAABO nightcap, Duncan Moreland eclipsed the 1,000-point mark for his career on the way to a game-high 20 points as the Panthers improved to 16-2 with an easy win over the Chieftains (4-15).
Jack Crowley added 18 for Beverly. Masconomet was led by Ben Dillon, who scored 17.
Beverly will take on Gloucester in the championship game Monday (6)
Swampscott 63, Wakefield 52
At Swampscott (9-11), Saturday on senior night, Andrew Augustin had 26 points, five rebounds, six steals and three assists.
Oscar Hale scored 11 points, and grabbed 13 rebounds.
Also helping scoring and contributing to our win was Justin Ratner nine points, seven rebounds, and four assists. Jacob Cooke had eight points, Jacob Yanetti five; Liam Hamilton pulled down nine rebounds, and Jason Aucone had a steal to clinch the win.
Belmont 70, St. John’s 67
At Woburn, freshman Rolando Castineyra led the way for the Eagles with 22 points, followed by Aidan Callahan, who had 20.
TRACK
MIAA Girls Division 5 Championship
It was a record-setting day for Lynnfield junior April Luders Sunday at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center. Luders, the top seed in the event, won the girls 55-meter hurdles in a school record time of 8.69. She also broke the school record in the preliminaries (8.73). Seeded ninth, sophomore Jasmine Rose also set a personal best with a 6th place finish in 9.35. She also placed ninth in the long jump (15-07.5)
The 4×400 relay team of junior Lauren Braconnier, freshman Bianca Guarracino, and junior twins Ashley and Lauren Mitchell set a 4:22.96 PR and placed 7th.
Lynnfield finished 11th out of 41 teams with 15 points.
Bishop Fenwick’s 4×400 team of Catherine Carter, Grace Kubat, Shannon Bresnahan and Ava Mahooney finished 6th in 4:22.46.
WRESTLING
MIAA Division 1 North Sectional
St. John’s Prep placed 13 of 14 wrestlers to win the team title with 207.5 points Saturday at Westford Academy. Adam Schaeublin won the 106-pound division, while Rawson Iwanicki won the 138-pound division. Nicholas Curly (113), Quinn Alexander (132), Achilles Gikas (160) and Owen Gaffney (195) posted runner-up finishes in their respective weight classes. The Prep will send 12 wrestlers who posted top-four finishes to the State Division 1 Championship at Methuen High School Friday and Saturday.
MIAA Division 2 North Sectional
The Lynnfield/North Reading wrestling team posted its best finish ever in Division 2, placing 10 of 11 wrestlers who competed. Sean McCullough was the top Pioneer with a runner-up finish at 182 pounds. Brandon Ouellette finished third at 220 pounds, while Christian Real-Costa (113) and Gerry Callagy (182) finished fourth in their respective weight classes. All four qualified for the State Division 2 Championship meet at Milton High School Friday and Saturday. Ryan McCullough (152) and Nik Marotta (160) finished fifth and are alternates for the divisional meet.
MIAA Division 3 North Sectional
Marblehead-Swampscott took part in the Division 3 North Sectional Championships at Wakefield High Saturday, with the Black and Blue placing fourth out of 17 teams. It was the best showing at sectionals as a team in the history of the program.
Six wrestlers, and an alternate, qualified for the D3 State Championships
in Wayland this weekend — the most since the co-op was established 20 years ago.
In addition, junior captain Michael Hopkins won the 100th Varsity match of his career. “Michael has been a go to wrestler for us for 3 years now.” said assistant coach, Mike Stamison. “He leads by example and the amount of off-season work he puts in is acknowledged every time his arm is raised- which is often.”
Wrestlers advancing are senior Captain, Cole Patrick (182) second; sophomore captain, Connor O’Brien (113) third; senior Jorge’ Maldonado (120) third; senior captain, John Cohen (132) third; junior Nick Sirota (152) third; Hopkins (145) fourth; and sophomore Ned Fitzgerald (HVW), fifth (alternate).
