It was a day to remember for a couple of local swimmers Sunday at the MIAA Boys North Sectional Championship meet at the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center on the campus of Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Lynnfield senior captain Antonio Anastasiades won gold and silver medals, while Swampscott junior Matthew Brown won gold and bronze medals.
Anastasiades knocked nearly five seconds off his seed time to win the 200 individual medley in 1:57.05 and also placed second in the 100 breaststroke in 58.33.
Brown smashed more than 10 seconds off his seed time to win the 500 freestyle in 4:50.81 and also placed third in the 200 IM in 2:00.96.
The team title was a battle between two-time champion Wayland and two-time runner up St. John’s Prep. It came down to the final race, the 400 freestyle relay with the Eagles needing to win to have any hope of winning the team title. While the Prep won, Wayland finished third to polish off the three-peat.
SWIMMING
Girls North Sectional
A handful of local schools competed in the girls North Sectional State swim meet at the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center at Massachusetts Institute of Technology Saturday.
The Marblehead girls swam to a sixth place finish with a pair of freshmen, Clementine Robins and Anna Coleman, posting top times in freestyle races. Robins finished third in both the 200 freestyle (2:01.81) and the 500 freestyle (5:32.50) while Coleman finished second in the 50 freestyle (25.23) and third in the 100 freestyle (54.82).
The Magicians 400 yard freestyle relay team of Coleman, Robins, Cecelia Robbins (freshman) and Brooke Wagner (Sophomore) finished fourth (3:58.24).
The Big Blue finished eighth with Elizabeth Dokina’s second place finish (1:04.99) in the 100 breaststroke highlighting Swampscott’s day. Lola Muntiu (5:39.15) finished seventh in the 500 freestyle while Swampscott’s 200 freestyle relay team of Muntiu, Dokina, Harper Cloptin and Judy Dicker (1:53.96) took eighth place.
English placed in a distant 25th but Mary Lawlor (1:05:15) finished ninth in the 100 backstroke. Hannah Trahant (241.40) placed 14th in diving, edging out Bishop Fenwick’s Isabella Forte (240.70).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Lynnfield 58, Manchester-Essex 49
There was no stopping the Morelli twins in the Pioneers’ road win Sunday. Tori Morelli scored 20 points, while Melissa checked in with 16 to help extend the Pioneers (11-6) winning streak to seven.
Trailing 41-36 going into the fourth quarter, the Pioneers outscored the Hornets 22-8 to seal the come-from-behind win. Caroline Waisnor was also in double figures with 10 points, while Grace Klonsky (six points), Cate MacDonald (five points) and Ava Buonfiglio (one point) also scored.
GIRLS HOCKEY
Marblehead 4, Scituate 3
At Rockett Arena Saturday, Marblehead trailed 3-1 early in the second period, but rallied with three unanswered goals to win. Madison Twombly (two goals) scored the game winner at the 3:34 mark of the third period. Rose Werner and Amy Vytopilova also scored. Riley Campbell, Hadley Wales, Molly O’Handley and Brook Brennan notched assists.
St. Mary’s 10, St. Joseph’s Prep 0
The Spartans remained unbeaten with Rhyan Pitari and Gianna Tringale combining for the shutout in net. Zoe Solomons led St. Mary’s with two goals and Marina DiaBiasio had one goal and two assists. Felicia D’Alessandro and Megan Parthum each had one goal and one assist.
St. Mary’s (13-0-3) hosts Catholic Central League rival Archbishop Williams Wednesday (6).
BOYS HOCKEY
St. Mary’s 7, Lowell Catholic 0
At Chelmsford Forum Saturday, the Spartans were led by Owen Maguire (goal, three assists), Brady Bullock (two goals, assist) and Max Giardina (two goals). Colby Magliozzi and Eric Toto also scored. Alex Nazarian, Davis Kline, Harrison Kline, Seamus Foley, Christian Moran, Austin Foglietta and Terence Moynihan notched assists. Sal Caruso and Sam York earned the shutout in net. St. Mary’s (10-5-2) is back in action Wednesday at Franklin (TBD).
