SAUGUS — The Saugus Police Department has charged a local man with attempted murder according to a statement released Tuesday by Interim Chief Ronald Giorgetti.
Jacob Bonia, 25, of Saugus, was arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including two counts of attempted murder, domestic assault and battery, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and assault and battery on a police officer.
Police responded to the report of a knife-wielding man on Woodbury Avenue at approximately 9:18 p.m. Monday night.
Once officers arrived at the scene, Bonia exited the building armed with a knife. After asking the suspect to drop his weapon, police ultimately decided to deploy a “non-lethal bean bag projectile” and were able to subdue Bonia.
Bonia was then taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital for evaluation. An arraignment date has not been set.
The statement also reports that, in accordance with the SPD’s policy for administrative leave, the officer who deployed the projectile has been placed on administrative leave while the incident remains under active investigation.
