SAUGUS — This month and next, the Galleries at LynnArts (GALA) and the Saugus Public Library present “Old World Streets,” featuring fine photography by Jack Holmes. His work is displayed in the library’s first-floor Reading Room.
An opening reception with the artist, who is a GALA member, will take place on Sunday, 1 to 3 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served. Come meet the artist, view his works, and spend some time with other art, travel, and photography lovers.
Holmes, a retired Lynn teacher, shoots with both digital and film cameras. All film images are scanned and converted to digital format, then all digital images are polished with modern photo-editing software for gallery presentation and for multimedia presentations. He prints his works with archival materials in his Lowell studio. In 2008, his image “Violent Ballet” won a major prize from National Geographic.
“I shoot with two eyes.” said Holmes. “One is the documentary eye; the other is the fine art eye. A digital photologue of my travel has to tell a story and give a sense of place. Fine art pieces capture images that resonate with the familiar, and the exotic. I hope they find a place inside the viewer; a place that connects them to the image.”
