The Bishop Fenwick girls hockey team earned its third consecutive St. Joseph’s Holiday Classic crown with a 4-0 shutout win over Arlington Catholic at Warrior Ice Arena Monday.
Emma Perry opened the scoring in the first period with freshman Abbey Millman’s assist. Perry netted her second goal of the night in the third period on Gabby Davern’s assist. Millman’s first varsity goal put the Crusaders ahead 3-0, with assists from Perry and Grace Morey. Davern closed the scoring with assists from Lauren Diranian and Catherine Salvo. Goalie Cailyn Wesley made 22 saves.
Fenwick (4-0-1) travels to Oakmont Friday (11).
BOYS HOCKEY
St. Mary’s 2, St. John’s (Shrewsbury) 2
Brady Carpenter’s power play tally knotted the score at 1-1 on Davis Kinne’s assist. Owen Maguire, with assists from Kyle LoNigro and Chris Kolodziej, put St. Mary’s up 2-1 in the third period. St. John’s tied it at 2-2 10 seconds later.
“We started slow in the first period after a 2-hour bus ride,” St. Mary’s coach Mark Lee said. “But St. John’s is a very talented team. They’re one of the top teams. I’m very proud of the way we played. We battled on the road against a tough, physical team. I’m proud of the effort.”
Spartans goalie Sal Caruso made 19 saves.
“Sal made some big stops for us,” Lee said.
St. Mary’s (2-0-1) travels to Valley Forum to skate against Austin Prep in the opening round of the Christie Serino Tournament Friday (7).
Bedford 3, Swampscott 0
The Big Blue fell for the second time in as many games with a non-conference road loss. Swampscott will match up against Lynn in the opening round of the Jets’ annual Christmas Tournament Wednesday (6) at Connery Rink.
St. John’s 3, Danvers 1
At Endicott’s Ray Bourque Arena, the Eagles overcame an early 1-0 deficit to grab their first win of the season. Ryan Webb’s first-period tally knotted the score at 1-1. Cole Lopilato and Ned Malolepszy each scored a goal.
The Eagles (1-1) host BC High Friday (3:30) in the Pete Frates Winter Classic.
Bedford (N.H.) 4, Marblehead 2
The Magicians got one goal each from Zach Piersol and Will Shull. Marblehead (3-1-0) is back in action Friday night (8) against Beverly.
BOYS BASKETBALL
St. Mary’s 62, Arlington Catholic 59 (OT)
Joey Abate-Walsh led St. Mary’s with 15 points and Josh Perez poured in 11. Lee Pacheco hauled in 12 rebounds. Ali Barry and David Brown made their first varsity starts.
The Spartans, on an off night shooting-wise, trailed for the majority of the game.
“Arlington Catholic always plays us tough,” Spartans coach Dave Brown said. “We knew we’d be in a for a dogfight. It was good to see the kids battle it out. Ali and David made seven of eight free throws in the final seconds and overtime to help us secure the win.”
St. Mary’s hosts Classical Friday (7) in the opening round of the Walter J. Boverini Tournament.
“We’re hoping to see a good crowd and support from the city,” Brown said. “This is a tournament we always look forward to.”
Winthrop 70, Georgetown 53
Cam Conway led the Vikings (1-1) to their first win of the season with 28 points and eight rebounds. Engell Ramadani added 16 points.
Winthrop hosts Ipswich next Monday (5).
Fenwick 64, Cathedral 49
Max Grenert’s 25 points and Kobe Estes (nine points, 16 rebounds) led Fenwick to a Catholic Central League win on the road.
Fenwick (1-1) hosts Marblehead in a non-conference tilt Friday (6:30).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
St. Mary’s 75, Arlington Catholic 24
The Spartans improved to 5-1. St. Mary’s raced out to a 23-2 lead after one quarter and never looked back.
Maiya Bergdorf (19 points), Alyssa Grossi (nine points), Yirsy Queliz (seven points), and Nicolette D’Itria (seven points) led the Spartans offense. Freshman Kellyn Preira added six points and five rebounds.
The Spartans host Classical in the opening round of the Boverini Tournament Friday (5:30).
Cathedral 79, Fenwick 59
Despite trailing by just three points at halftime, a tough second half spelled doom for the Crusaders.
Veronica Tache led the way on offense with 20 points and three assists, while Annie Murphy recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Fenwick (1-1) is back in action Saturday (7) when it hosts Reading.
