SAUGUS — Alexander C. Mello has been appointed as Saugus’s Senior Planner.
In a statement released Dec. 11, Town Manager Scott Crabtree announced the new hire, and added that Mello “offers a wealth of experience” in the fields of planning, development, and municipal government.
Crabtree said he believes the appointment “will be beneficial for the residents of Saugus and the community as a whole.”
Mello, who started in his position earlier last month, holds a Masters degree in Regional Planning from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and is a member of the American Association of Planning’s Massachusetts chapter.
He previously worked in Chelsea as the city’s Planner and Land Use administrator, and has also served as Framingham’s Associate Program Planner. Prior to his current post, Mello lived in and worked for the city of Somerville before moving to Saugus four years ago.
“I’ve been onboarding (for) about a month, so it’s really just been trying to familiarize myself with the town and getting the lay of the land, so to speak,” Mello said. “I’m looking forward to learning some of the issues that are facing the town, and doing whatever I can to help overcome them.”
One upcoming project he says he’s eager to embark on is the all-encompassing master plan Saugus will soon implement, which Mello says will look at everything from transportation, zoning and land use, and public facilities, to economic development and natural resources.
“It’s going to be an exciting opportunity to document the town for the next decade or so,” Mello said, “so we can help achieve that vision over the course of the next few years.
“I’m excited to be a part of the team, and I’m looking forward to the future of Saugus. I think it looks pretty bright, and I’m happy to help in any way that I can.”
