LYNN — The Lynn Fire Department is cautioning residents about the importance of cleaning lint out their dryers after a minor fire broke out in the basement of a Keslar Avenue home Thursday morning.
Shortly after 9 a.m., Lynn firefighters responded to a dryer fire at 11 Keslar Ave., a single-family home near the Lynn/Saugus line. Crews were able to put out the blaze quickly and contain it to the appliance, Lynn Fire Capt. Joseph Zukas said.
There was minor smoke and water damage throughout the basement and crews had to break a window to get inside, but the rest of the home was unscathed, Zukas said.
“It was a good stop by Lynn Fire,” said Zukas.
Zukas said the fire was caused by lint in the dryer, which is a common cause of fires in the United States. He stressed the importance of cleaning out the lint filter after each use.
There were no injuries to the three residents of the single family-home. The mother, her 26-year-old son, and 1-year-old granddaughter were not displaced, Zukas said.
The two factors that led to a quick response were working smoke detectors in the home and crews responding from a nearby fire station, Engine 9 on Boston Street, Zukas said.
A resident was alerted to the fire by a smoke detector, checked on smoke coming from the basement and saw flames coming from the closed dryer, Zukas said.
He also noted the importance of having operating fire stations nearby so fires can be knocked down more quickly. Several stations have been decommissioned in the city due to budget cuts.
“Having a fire station in numerous areas of the city is very beneficial to the public,” Zukas said.
