PEABODY — Firefighters confined an industrial fire to one corner of a large Pulaski Street building that sent a man to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment.
Deputy Fire Chief Hank Hogan did not initially release the man’s name and said he required medical attention after fire ignited about 10 a.m. in a leather manufacturing shop inside the 30,000 square foot warehouse located at 58 Pulaski St.
Hogan said the sight that greeted responding firefighters prompted him to call in all available Peabody fire companies — two ladders and four engines — to the fire and arranged for mutual aid from neighboring fire departments.
“They had heavy fire coming out the building’s ventilation vents,” Hogan said.
Even as they battled flames at the rear of the building and on its roof, Hogan said firefighters responded to a report of someone inside the shop. They quickly learned the man had left the building safely.
“The fire was isolated to booths used in a manufacturing process. There was extensive damage. The business will be shut down for quite a while,” Hogan said.
He said the fire was declared out at 2:30 p.m. and a firefighter was treated for a minor injury.
