Make that two wins in a row for the Saugus football team.
The Sachems, behind three touchdown runs from Marvens Jean, rolled past Gloucester in a 30-6 non-tournament win at Newell Stadium Friday night. Quarterback Christian Correia ran in a touchdown. Jean tacked on a 2-point conversion via rush. Corriea hit Bruno Auzec for a conversion pass.
“It was a complete team win,” Saugus coach Steve Cummings said. “We forced turnovers on defense. Special teams was great. We didn’t have to punt. We had some guys step up. Chase Ledbury made his first varsity start and helped set up a touchdown for us with an interception. Bruno helped set up another touchdown with an interception. Donovan Clark had a big reception that he took down to the 3-yard line. He’s a sophomore making his first start at receiver.
“It was nice to see younger guys making plays and our older guys helping us finish drives.”
Saugus (3-7) hosts Peabody Thanksgiving Day (10).
“We have some guys fitting into roles, which is good,” Cummings said. “Guys are increasing what they’re doing on the field. We have some momentum and we have a good thing going right now.”
Shrewsbury 57, Classical 29
Dual-threat quarterback Daniel Gisonno carried in two touchdowns and tossed scores to Kyle Durant (22-yard catch) and Maurice Sequeira (20-yard catch). Gisonno’s touchdown runs were of 71 and 10 yards. Gisonno, who eclipsed 2,000 passing yards for the season, broke Classical’s single-season passing yards mark. Keith Ridley held the previous record.
Durant went 3-for-3 on PATs and Gisonno added a 2-point conversion rush.
“Shrewsbury’s a tough opponent,” Classical coach Brian Vaughan said. “I thought we played well, just not well enough. We played well early. They grinded out a little bit. We had some key turnovers on drives. They scored twice on defense, that’s when things got away from us.
“But I thought it was good for our guys to see what good Central Mass. football’s about. Hopefully that game will get us ready for Thanksgiving.”
Classical, 6-4, has a week and a half to prepare for Thanksigiving’s (10) clash with English.

“We showed a lot of grit, a lot of toughness,” Winthrop coach Jonathan Cadigan said. “Greater Lowell’s a tough team. They were the No. 2 seed in Division 6 North. It showed the true character of our team. We never quit and we made plays when we needed to.”
Winthrop hosts Revere Thanksgiving Day (10).
