Union Hospital emergency room closed on Sunday

LYNN — Union Hospital closed its emergency room Sunday at 11:59 p.m.

The closure of Union's ER coincided with the opening of a new, expanded emergency department at Salem Hospital, which has been relocated to One Dove Ave., and is accessible to patients from Jefferson Avenue or via a new access road that cuts through the Salem campus between the Highland Avenue and Dove Avenue entrances.

The new emergency department is part of Partners Healthcare's $207 million expansion of North Shore Medical Center on the Salem campus, which is consolidating Salem and Union hospitals.

"These new facilities are designed to ensure that all residents of the North Shore have access to state-of-the-art services and care here in the community," said NSMC President David J. Roberts in a statement.

NSMC is encouraging Lynn residents in need of emergency services to go to Salem Hospital, but those with less acute needs will have access to an Urgent Care Center, which will open on Monday and be located Union Hospital's former emergency department.

The urgent care center will stay open until May 2020, when a $23 million, 40,000 square-foot medical village will open on the Union campus, which will offer urgent care, outpatient psychiatry services, and an expanded home for the North Shore Physicians Group Lynn primary and specialty care practice currently located on the Lynn campus.
