Seven different players scored touchdowns Friday night as the St. John’s Prep football team moved to 4-0 with a 47-22 victory over Somerville at Fred Glatz Field.
The Eagles sprung out to a 35-0 lead by the third quarter before coach Brian St. Pierre substituted freely to finish out the game.
Two players (John Bunnell and Nick Baldini) ran back interceptions for scores.
Other Eagles scoring touchdowns were Nick Masterson, Matt Duchemin, Max LaPlante, Carson Harwood and Matt Stewart.
The Eagles travel to Westford Academy next Friday for a 3:45 game due to concerns about the Triple-E virus.
FOOTBALL
Spellman 35, St. Mary’s 14
The Cardinals scored the first two touchdowns of the game and never looked back in the win at Holbrook.
“We missed a lot of tackles,” Spartans coach Sean Driscoll said. “They handled us up front a little bit. Spellman’s a bit more of a veteran team than we are and it showed. We made some plays but we made some mistakes that an inexperienced team makes.”
St. Mary’s, which had yet to allow a point before Friday’s game, scored on Derek O’Leary’s 2-yard quarterback keeper (conversion failed) and Ali Barry’s 62-yard run (Omar Ayouch rush).
“On defense we didn’t play as well as we did the first two weeks,” Driscoll said. “We had to make the one-on-one plays and we didn’t, and that was the difference. But I like the way we battled. We hung in there.”
The Spartans (2-1) host Catholic Central League rival Fenwick (4-0) next Saturday (7).
“It doesn’t get any easier,” Driscoll said. “We know what Fenwick’s all about this year.”
Danvers 14, Winthrop 13
Jack Stangie gave the Falcons an early 7-0 lead with a 20-yard touchdown run. Rich Canova followed with a 3-yard carry, stretching Danvers’ lead to 14-0.
Showing no quit, the Vikings fought back. Touchdown runs from Bobby Hubert (five yards) and Austin Daigneault (10 yards) closed the gap to 14-13 but Danvers held its slim lead through the closing minutes. Tyler Rockefeller also contributed to the offense.
“We can play with anybody,” Winthrop coach Jonathan Cadigan said. “I think we proved that. I don’t know if we can beat anybody right now. It’s one or two plays we aren’t making that other teams are making. We showed toughness. Danvers was just one point better.”
Winthrop (1-2) travels to Swampscott next Friday (7).

Steve Dembowski, a former player and coach at Swampscott High, recorded his 150 victory on the sidelines Friday when Milton defeated Walpole, 33-14.
Dembowski coached the Big Blue for 16 years, and left with a 114-67 record to join the Wildcats to be closer to his home on the South Shore. He’s in his fifth season at Milton, where he’s 36-11.
Dembowski coached Swampscott to a Super Bowl victory in 2007 — the team’s first state championship since the inaugural game in 1972 when it defeated Catholic Memorial in Division 2. He was both The Item’s Player of the Year and Coach of the Year while at Swampscott.
