Following the viewing, at 7 p.m., there will be a lecture, “Lost Lives, New Worlds: Unlocking the Story of the 1650 Scottish Soldiers Buried on Palace Green in Durham, England,” at Saugus Town Hall, 298 Central St. The lecture is to be delivered by Dr. Chistopher Gerrard, Professor of Archaeology at Durham (UK) and the team leader for the Scottish Soldiers Project and designer of the exhibit currently at Saugus Iron Works.
Dr. Gerrard and his team discovered a mass grave on the grounds of Durham Cathedral that turned out to be prisoners of war from the 1650 Battle of Dunbar. These men were brothers-in-arms of the Scottish prisoners transported to Massachusetts, where they worked at Saugus Iron Works as well as a couple of sawmills in Maine.

Take a walk down memory lane with the Saugus Historical Commission and discover the fascinating story of the Saugus Public Schools. Beginning with one-room schools even before Saugus became a separate town, the presentation progresses through the proud history of each and every school in the town. Why is this important? As soon as the year 2021, there will only be three remaining schools in Saugus: a new Middle/High School complex, a primary elementary school at the Veterans Memorial School and an upper-grade elementary school at the Belmonte School. The remaining schools will either be demolished or re-purposed. There are many adults living in Saugus today who attended these schools and have very fond memories of their childhood days.
The Commission’s goal to preserve the longstanding history of our town will be highlighted through its educational institutions. A PowerPoint presentation containing narration and pictures of school buildings and class pictures over the years will be featured as a part of this year’s Essex National Heritage Commission’s Trails and Sails Activities. Town Hall Annex Building on 25R Main St., 10 a.m.
