SOMERVILLE — A 32-year-old Lynn man is facing charges after he was tracked down by a State Police K9 following a police pursuit through multiple towns early Monday morning, police said.
Charges against Jerry A. Martinez are being finalized, but are expected to include operating under the influence of liquor, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, trespassing, possession of open containers of alcohol and marijuana in a motor vehicle, and several other motor vehicle offenses, state police said.
A pursuit ensued after state police troopers attempted to stop a 2003 Chevy Trailblazer sport utility vehicle in Charlestown for several motor vehicle offenses shortly after 2 a.m., state police said.
The driver, later identified as Martinez, refused to stop and led police on a chase through Route 99 and then onto Route 38, where the SUV blew a tire and eventually had to stop on Route 28 at Butler Street in Somerville, state police said.
Both Martinez and the passenger, a 24-year-old East Boston man, got out of the SUV. The passenger was immediately detained, but Martinez took off running. Police used a stun gun on Martinez, but he was able to climb a fence and escape, state police said.
Police surrounded the area and searched for Martinez, deploying a police dog. The dog found the suspect about an hour after the chase began, wedged between two fences in brush in the backyard of a Sidney Street home, state police said.
Martinez was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was treated for a dog bite and an injury he sustained from jumping the fence, state police said.
The East Boston man was questioned and released.
