2019 Football Previews: Revere Patriots

REVERE — The injury bug bit the Revere football team hard in 2018. At every position you looked to — quarterback, running back, receiver, offensive and defensive line — the Patriots sustained injuries. Despite that, Revere fought its way to a 7-4 record and a No. 6 seed in the Division 4 North tournament. The Patriots even earned a win before bowing out to Gloucester in the semifinal round.

“It was a great year for us, despite all of the injuries we suffered,” said coach Lou Cicatelli, who is now in his 18th season. “When you lose that many guys during the season it can be tough, but our guys battled through it every step of the way.”

The 2019 season sees a number of key contributors return to the field after missing games with injuries. Junior quarterback Calvin Boudreau — who started as a freshman before breaking his collarbone and missing his sophomore season — is one of those.

“We’re really excited to have Calvin back in the mix,” Cicatelli said. “People though I was crazy when I started him as a freshman, but he played great. He’s got a great arm and great legs.”

Also returning are the senior captains in running backs Zach Furlong, Lucas Barbosa and Jonathan Murphy, lineman Jeryd Benson and defensive end Mazer Ali.

“We have a lot of experienced guys returning a key spots, and that’s huge for any team,” Cicatelli said. “We have a lot of guys who can really make an impact on the game.”

Senior running back Joe Llanos, who broke his leg three games into 2018, also returns. Junior receiver Dillon Day will see plenty of playing time as well.

Revere has been hard at work over the course of the preseason, scrimmaging against both Danvers and Northeast Tech as well as attending a jamboree with Malden. Cicatelli saw his group build confidence through the summer.

“Things have been going well for us so far, we’re executing nicely and we’re competing well when we go up against other teams,” Cicatelli said. “I think the real key for us is health, because if we can stay healthy then the sky’s the limit.”

The Patriots open the season with a challenge, taking on NEC foe Gloucester Friday night (7) at Harry Della Russo Stadium.

“That’s a big game for us, they beat us twice last year,” said Cicatelli. “We want to come out and make an impression in the first game, and we’re going to need to execute at our best to be able to do that.”

Gloucester finished the 2018 season at 9-3 and reached the Division 4 state semifinal, where the Fishermen lost to Nashoba. The Fishermen are under a new direction, with new coach Dan O’Connor, formerly an assistant at KIPP, replacing Tony Zerilli. Zerilli stepped down in December.

Beverly and Danvers both opened their seasons with wins. The Panthers defeated Winthrop 21-6 last Friday and host English next Saturday (1) at Hurd Stadium. The Falcons, which reached the Division 3 North final last season, beat Masconomet 40-20 and host Classical next Friday (7).

Salem hopes to turn things around after a 5-6 season in 2018. The Witches visit Peabody Friday (7).
