Gordon Shepard’s restoration work to be shown on video

SAUGUS — The Sons of Union Veterans will present a video of a local volunteer’s work to restore veteran cemetery plots at Wednesday’s Saugus Historical Society meeting.

The Historical Society’s first meeting of the fall season will feature Kevin Tucker, Massachusetts Department Commander of the Sons of Union Veterans, who will present a

video of Gordon Shepard’s work restoring the G.A.R. plot at Riverside

Cemetery.

Shepard has been donating countless hours of his own time fixing up the graves of local veterans, and much of the present beauty in Riverside Cemetery is due to his work.

The discussion will include a lesson on the G.A.R., why the organization is significant to the history of the United States, and why it’s important to remember Saugus residents buried here.

The Saugus Historical Society meeting is free and open to the public,

and will be held at 30 Main St. at 7 p.m. Light refreshments will be served.
