The Greater Lynn Chamber of Commerce is committed to enhancing the economic vitality of southern Essex County.
For 135 years, General Electric has been a fixture in Lynn, employing many of our relatives, friends and neighbors. It is ever clear that these well-paying jobs are vital to the local community and economy. The GE-Lynn plant and its 2,600 employees contribute $450 million in total gross value to Essex County GDP, including millions in business with numerous local suppliers and vendors.
On Tuesday, July 9, members of IUE-CWA Local 201 (the union that represents more than 1,200 employees at GE-Lynn) voted to reject a new four-year contract with GE. While this vote represents only a step in the negotiation process, union leaders have told their members to “prepare for a strike.”
The Greater Lynn Chamber of Commerce sincerely hopes that further dialogue/negotiations will continue. We are optimistic that GE and its workers can achieve contract ratification and avoid the alternative of a strike. A new deal will help power ongoing collaborations at GE and strengthen our business community for future economic growth and vitality.
