Steven DiLisio of Swampscott became the first North Shore golfer in 54 years to win the Massachusetts Amateur championship Friday, defeating Jimmy Hervol, 3 and 2, in a 36-hole final at The Country Club in Brookline.
DiLisio, who plays out of Salem Country Club and will be a senior at Duke University this fall, took command during the first 18 holes Friday and never relinquished.
The last North Shore golfer to win the title was Ted Carangelo in 1965.
The Phillips Exeter graduate, who also attended St. John’s Prep, had to play four 18-hole rounds in two days to claim this championship.
Thursday, he took down Matt Parziale (Thorny Lea) in a quarterfinal 7 and 6, winning without dropping a hole.
Later in the day Thursday, his semifinal against Walpole’s Jack Boulger remained tied through four because neither golfer won a hole. DiLisio took a 1-up lead on the fifth, and won five of the last seven to secure a 4 and 3 win.
