The St. Mary’s baseball team grabbed its fourth consecutive win Friday with a 7-5 victory at Winchester.
Lee Pacheco led the Spartans on the mound and at the plate. He pitched four innings and allowed two earned runs on six hits. Pacheco helped his own cause with a grand-slam and finished 1-for-4 with four RBI.
“We had a big fourth inning,” Spartans coach Derek Dana said. “Lee started on the mound. We didn’t play great behind them at the start. We were down 3-0. DJ had a big two-run double and Jared tied the game with a single. Then Lee just came up and gave us what we needed with a huge grand slam. That gave us a four-run lead and that’s exactly what we needed.”
DJ DiCenso knocked in a pair of runs and finished 1-for-2. Jared Coppola continued his torrid surge, going 1-for-2 with a RBI and two runs scored. John Mulready scored two runs, while Kyle Ouellette and Richie Pagliuca each scored once.
Aiven Cabral tossed two innings in relief and struck out three. Coppola pitched a scoreless seventh for the save, with help from Cabral at shortstop on a highlight-reel catch for the final putout.
The Spartans (15-6) close the regular season Saturday (12) at Cardinal Spellman.
“I’d love to finish the season with a win,” Dana said. “All the wins are important to help our seeding and keep the momentum alive.”
BASEBALL
Classical 6, Somerville 2
Freshman Anthony Marino picked up the win on the mound. Marino tossed four innings with two earned runs and a strikeout. Patrick Whalen pitched two scoreless innings and David Barnard, making his first appearance of the season, threw a scoreless seventh.
“I think the nerves were there for David,” Classical coach Mike Zukowski said. “I think it was more of a mental thing than a physical thing. We talked about that at practice. We set it up to try and get him into this game. He had an at-bat and hit a deep fly ball to centerfield. I think the nerves settled down after that because he pitched a 1-2-3 inning. You could see the difference in the team. The guys were excited.”
Nico Galeazzi (3-for-4, two runs), Brett Bucklin (2-for-4, two RBI), Aidan Dow (double, two RBI), Jared DeFillipo (1-for-4, RBI) and Kyle Finnigan (1-for-1, RBI) carried the offense. Brendan Lannon, Kyle Durant and Deniel Ortiz each had one hit.
“We haven’t played since last Saturday,” Zukowski said. “Those two Clancy games weren’t our best games at all. We made all the routine plays and we made some really nice plays (Friday). A couple guys got some good looks at the ball in this one. Nico and Brett had four doubles at the top of our order so that was nice to see right away.”
The Rams wrap the regular season at 14-6 and await the state tournament pairings.
“We’ll scrimmage Monday at Swampscott,” Zukowski said. “Tuesday morning we’ll find out our seed. Depending our seed we might get another scrimmage in and we’ll go from there. “
Fenwick 7, Stoneham 4
Christian Loescher earned the win on the mound with 5 ⅔ innings. He allowed one earned run and fanned four.
Trey Deloury (2-for-3) and Harrison Brickett (2-for-3) each had two RBI.
Fenwick hosts Bedford for a double-header Saturday (2/4:30).
